Following Roland Deschain's journey through Lud, his ka-tet riddle for their lives aboard the schizophrenic monorail Blaine before reaching the Topeka, Kansas of an alternate universe and hiking the Kansas Turnpike. On the road, Roland recounts the months following the earning of his guns, during which he was sent to the Barony of Mejis where he confronted the Big Coffin Hunters and fell in love Susan Delgado. After finishing his tale, Roland leads the ka-tet on to a castle that looks like Emerald City and a confrontation with Marten Broadcloak and the Tick-Tock Man.
