Brian Mulligan is an American operatic baritone. Born in New York, Brian studied at Yale University and the Juilliard School. During the 2015/16 season, Brian appeared at San Francisco Opera as Sweeney Todd with Patrick Summers and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with Nicola Luisotti conducting. At the Metropolitan Opera, Brian had a role debut as Paolo Albiani in Simon Boccanegra along side Placido Domingo, with James Levine conducting. Brian created the role of Jack Torrance in the world premiere of Paul Moravec's The Shining with Michael Christie at Minnesota Opera. European engagements included a return to Opernhaus Zürich as Yeletsky in Pique Dame and his debut at the Theater an der Wien as Tadeusz in Oper Frankfurt's production of the Passenger, presented by the Wiener Festwochen. Brian also appeared at San Francisco Opera as Roderick Usher in both Gordon Getty's Usher House and Debussy's La chute de la maison Usher. He finished his season with another role debut, John Proctor in the Crucible with Nicole Paiement conducting, in a new production by Francesca Zambello at the Glimmerglass Festival.
Brian has garnered much critical acclaim in his career, particularly for his performances of Richard Nixon in Nixon in China with San Francisco Opera, Enrico in the David Alden production of Lucia di Lammermoor at Canadian Opera Company, English National Opera and Washington National Opera, the title role in Hamlet with Minnesota Opera and Valentin in Faust at the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera.
Brian has also performed with many of the finest orchestras in America, including the Cleveland Orchestra (Sea Symphony), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Songs for Adam), the San Francisco Symphony (Das klagende Lied), the Baltimore Symphony (Carmina Burana), the Houston Symphony (Paulus), the Atlanta Symphony (Sea Symphony) and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Mahler Symphony #8). A performance of Mahler’s 8th Symphony, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon and released on DVD in 2012.
Brian Mulligan holds dual citizenship with the United States and Ireland.
