- "This isn't over. This isn't over by a long shot!"
Christine "Chris" Hargensen was the daughter of John Hargensen, and a student at Ewen High School in Chamberlain, Maine. She was the leader of the particular band of girls who continually teased, harassed and bullied Carrie White. Chris had a boyfriend named Billy Nolan and a best friend named Tina Blake. She is the main antagonist throughout most of the book and films.
All three characters, as well as several others, hatched a scheme to humiliate Carrie in a particular gruesome way at their senior prom at Ewen High School. However, Carrie turned the tables on them, and Chris, Billy and everyone else who helped them ended up receiving the more bitter end of their plan.
All that is known about this version of Chris was that she was the leader of a well-known clique at Ewen High School and that she had an apparently long history of bullying unpopular or outcast fellow classmates, and has been sent to detention 73 times in four years. She had also been known to slip a firecracker in the shoe of a girl with harelip and blew her front two toes off. Also, this version of the character was more vulgar than the one from the movie. Here is a small example: halfway through through the book, she called Mr. Morton a "cocksucker," and stood up to Miss Desjardin, getting slammed into a group of lockers and banned from the prom. Later, after setting the prom night debacle into motion, Chris and Billy attempted to make love inside of a roadhouse until they were interrupted by a fellow classmate, Jackie Talbot, who warned them that their school was burning to the ground. Some time afterward, just as Carrie arrived in the roadhouse's parking lot, Chris and Billy hurried to Billy's car, started it up and made their way towards the bloodied and weakened Carrie, thinking that they were going to run her over and put the finishing touch on their plans.
Being telekinetic, Carrie took control of the car with her mind and sent it and its passengers into the roadhouse. The car exploded and set the building on fire, killing Chris and Billy.
1976 Film Edit
Actress Nancy Allen portrayed this version of the character Chris. She was similar to her novel counterpart: very rebellious, unfazed by authority figures and manipulative. She initiated the shower incident with Carrie and, when she and the other girls in her class were forced to serve a special kind of "detention" with Miss Collins, she refused to cooperate on all fronts and was banned from the prom. Afterwards, it was almost second nature in Chris' eyes to blame Carrie for her new troubles and, looking for any way to destroy her and turned to her boyfriend Billy Nolan to manipulate him for that..
The pair went out driving one night (neither seemed to be enjoying it anyway) and Chris used this as the perfect opportunity to spin her "noodle-headed" beau around her finger once more and get him to do something for her. Billy was virtually clueless until he heard Chris say, "Billy, I hate Carrie White."
A couple of nights later, Chris, Billy and two of his friends creeped into a pig farm with the intent on pulling a "stunt": that stunt turned out to be one of them killing a helpless pig, draining its blood and pouring it into a bucket. But, there was more to it--Billy and Chris later broke into the Bates High School gym, where the former climbed a ladder up towards the rafters, placed the bucket on one of them and pour the pigs blood into it. Chris was getting impatient and wanted to go home. Billy told her that if she kept cool, she would get to pull the rope cord on the bucket when everything was ready. Chris all too happily obliged.
Chris was seen the next day with a friend of Billy's, Freddy, talking to the prom committee leader Ernie. Freddy convinced Ernie to allow him to collect the ballots for the prom king and queen, and Ernie agreed. But when he was asked to be at school at 6:30, Freddy did not want any of that, and blurted out that he would arrive at eight. Ernie was a bit discouraged, but consented nonetheless.
Later, during the prom, Chris and Billy spent most of their time hiding under the stage, looking for Carrie and her date Tommy Ross. The two were also looking around for Freddy and Norma (Chris "right-hand woman") to see if they were collecting the ballots for prom king and queen. They were...until Norma and Freddy retired to the other side of the stage, where Norma kicked the real ballots behind her and pulled another set of "ballots" from Freddy's coat. She gave these to the small king/queen committee who were counting the polls and then headed over to the stage's stairwell, and gave it a small tap.
Chris and Billy peeked their heads out to acknowledge the "signal."
Chris continued tugging restlessly at the rope all while Carrie and Tommy were heading to the stage to be crowned the prom king and queen. Later, she watched as Sue was dragged from out of the gym by Ms. Collins. As soon as the doors were closed again, Chris pulled the rope tied to the bucket of blood. The applause and cheers were silenced...and soon some of the kids began laughing at what they had seen.
Their "work" done, Billy and Chris quickly found the nearest exit and fled out of it. Of course, they had a window-side view through which to see the results of the actions: Carrie had suddenly gone into a trance-like state and began destroying the gym and everyone inside (much to Chris's and Billy's shock). The pair then ran off feeling as though their plan had backfired.
Later, Chris and Billy chanced upon Carrie as she was apparently walking home. What's worse, they were both in Billy's car! Chris somehow felt that the original plan to crush Carrie had not done enough, so she decided that she was going to finish it herself. Chris revved up the car and footed the gas pedal, heading straight towards Carrie. It seemed as though she would finally strike down her "enemy" and have done, but it was Carrie who struck the final blow--with her telekinetics, she took away control of the car from Chris and sent it rolling into a clearing for a few yards. After a while, the vehicle exploded, undoubtedly killing Chris and Billy.
2002 Remake Edit
Chris was portrayed by Emilie de Ravin, and was more similar to the "novel" Chris than Nancy Allen's version. At one point, she even tried to convince Carrie that Sue was the "enemy." In this film, Chris is presented as a cruel, wicked and manipulative girl however she does have some remorse
Earlier, after Chris was banned from the prom because of testing Ms. Desjarden and not bowing to the punishment for what she did to Carrie, her father, the "big-time lawyer" John Hargensen (Michael Kopsa) threatened to have the gym teacher fired and take the school to court if Chris' prom privileges were not restored. Principal Morton, however, did not cave in, and countered by saying that he would battle Hargensen's suit on all fronts. He further stated that Chris belonged in either military school or jail for her countless acts of cruelty against the "reject" student population. Faced with this situation her father relents, for which Chris swears revenge on Carrie encouraged also by Billy.
Unlike the other versions however, Chris is shown having a certain degree of change of heart when she saw how happy Carrie was and was reluctant to drench pig's blood over Carrie as she was thinking of redeeming herself for what she did to her but Billy pressured her to go along with the plot and she gave in killing Tommy on the way together with Billy. Also Billy attempted to run over Carrie as Chris pleads for him to stop. Still, however she did not stop Billy and Carrie later stops the car and sends it smashing to a tree, killing both Billy and Chris.
In the 2013 film, Chris is be played by Portia Doubleday.
"Help. Me." - Chris' last words.Chris in this version is similar to the book. Chris is the main leader of the Ultras and records Carrie having her period on her phone, which she posts on the Internet. She is forced to be in Miss. Desjardin's boot camp style detention. She refuses to keep up the detention and tells her dad and also is banned from the prom. Chris and her dad talk with Mr. Morton and Chris's dad tells her to give her the phone, but she refuses and storms out. Later on Chris and her evil boyfriend Billy Nolan go to a farm and slaughter a pig. Chris then slits the pigs throat. Chris, Billy, and his other friends are setting up the bucket and a drip of blood lands on her. The night of the prom Chris texts Sue saying "Your girl looks so good, she won't for long", and Sue rushes to the school. She then gets tempted by Billy to pull the rope. After Billy pulls it she falls back. She watches the blood pour on Carrie and smiles. When Carrie is humiliated Chris laughs with excitement. She then begins to run with Billy, but then stops when she sees the bucket hits Tommy's head, Billy pulls her out of the gymnasium. Chris looks back at the burning gym while Billy is driving and worries. When Billy pulls over she texts her dad to come and get her, but Billy threatens her. Chris and Billy discuss how they are going to escape before attempting to leave. When Carrie unleashes her power and forces Chris to face her for what she did, all she thinks is about killing her pressing Billy to do it, to which he relents. When Carrie uses her powers in self defence and stops the car from running her down, Chris falls back while Billy goes head first into the steering wheel. She shakes Billy frightened not knowing what happened. She attempts to flee the car but Carrie locks the door. Carrie also tries to strangle Chris with the seatbelt, but Chris tears off the seatbelt. Carrie lifts up the car and both Chris and Carrie are silent and have a cold, long stare, but Chris still tries to run over Carrie. Carrie then sends the car into a gas pump and Chris goes face-first into the windshield. Chris bleeds and suffers, with glass sticking out of her cheeks and multiple open wounds, until is finally succumbed to. Carrie then sends a pole crashing exploding the car in the process.
This Chris's version is more tough than the other incarnations, implying that she is auto-centered on her own safety. In spite of it becomes witness with fright of the telekinesis of Carrie during the duel by car, it does not prevent her from wanting to kill he) scapegoat. The previous versions were not conscious of Carrie's powers, even if they supposed that she was the cause of the accidents. It implies that this Chris considers Carrie at the same time as her scapegoat and an abomination.
