"Cain Rose Up" is a short story written by Stephen King. It was original published in the Spring 1968 issue of Ubris, and later included in King's own 1985 collection Skeleton Crew.
Title
The story is named in reference to Genesis 4:8: "Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him."
Summary
The story concerns depressed and homicidal college student Curt Garrish, who goes on a murderous sniper rampage from his dorm room at the end of the school year. Curt talks frequently about how people should either do the best they can with their life or die.
Similarities
Elements of the plot recall King's earlier Bachman novel Rage, including both the tortured protagonists having a propensity for violence and a classmate named "Pig Pen."
